Elder Press is not a very well-kept Chiswick secret. I've hesitated writing about this place because of its relative anonymity, but it seems that the secret is very much out. Lately, it is even more difficult to get a table than usual, so I have nothing to lose by posting about it here. Elder Press is by the Thames, with a near monopoly on the riverside coffee market. Despite not having much competition, the food and drinks do not disappoint. This is the go to place for locals to grab a coffee before a dog walk, or run along the river. On a boat race day, or when the sun is out, it is absolutely rammed with people.
Dogs are allowed both downstairs, and in their outside courtyard, but not upstairs: which depending on whether you are with your dog or not, can be seen as a good or bad thing. The entrance way is small, and when crowded, it can feel a little overwhelming. Pilot is almost constantly overstimulated: his eyes constantly on the door looking for each new potential friend (or enemy) to interact with. There have definitely been a couple of occasions that Pilot has barked his bead off at a French Bulldog (His sworn enemy)... They serve an eclectic menu, with changing specials: Kimchi Fried Rice, Buckwheat waffles and Miso porridge. If you are looking for more standard breakfast items, this place is probably not for you, unless you stick to their pastries. However, their pastries and cake are standout. I honestly sometimes crave their morning bun for weeks at a time before succumbing.

The only thing I am not a fan of is their Chicken toasty, one of their lunch items, but all of their breakfast fair is pretty decent. I recommend the supergrain porridge, the morning bun or their mushrooms on toast. Elder Press is definitely worth a visit, and a nice area to walk along the river with your dog afterwards. I would recommend going early in the morning to get a table, and to grab a morning bun before they are all gone.
